How to Prep Your CybertruckUpdated 8 months ago

Proper preparation is crucial before wrapping your Cybertruck. Although the vehicle's stainless steel surface is durable, it’s essential to remove all contaminants to ensure that the vinyl adheres smoothly and without any bumps or imperfections. Below is a step-by-step guide to prepping your Cybertruck for wrapping.

1. Importance of Prep Work

Even though the Cybertruck's surface isn’t traditional paint, it’s still vital to thoroughly clean and prep it. Any contaminants left on the surface can cause the vinyl to lift, wrinkle, or fail to adhere properly, leading to a less-than-perfect finish. By taking the time to prep your vehicle, you’ll ensure that the wrap looks flawless and lasts for years.

2. Washing the Vehicle

  • Initial Rinse and Prep Wash:

    • Start by thoroughly washing your Cybertruck. Begin with a rinse to remove loose dirt and debris.
    • Use the Prep Wash provided in your kit. Mix the Prep Wash with water (approximately 1/8 of the bottle per bucket) and apply it to the vehicle. The Prep Wash acts as a degreaser, removing any oils or residues from the surface.
    • Wash the vehicle section by section, using straight, smooth motions with a wash mitt or microfiber cloth. As you work, remember to rinse your mitt in a separate bucket to avoid reapplying contaminants to the surface.
  • Rinse Thoroughly:

    • After washing, thoroughly rinse the vehicle to remove all soap and contaminants. Be sure to rinse each section completely before moving on to the next to prevent soap from drying on the surface.

3. Clay Bar Treatment

  • Using the Clay Bar:

    • After washing, use the Clay Bar to remove any remaining contaminants that could interfere with the vinyl application. Spray a small amount of soapy water or a lubricant over the surface, then gently glide the clay bar over the area.
    • The clay bar will pick up any tiny particles left behind by washing, leaving the surface smooth and ready for wrapping. Use straight motions and apply light pressure—you’re not scrubbing, just lightly dragging the clay across the surface.
  • Focus on Edges and Corners:

    • Pay extra attention to the edges and corners of panels, where contaminants can accumulate. These areas are critical for vinyl adhesion, so ensure they are thoroughly cleaned.

4. Drying the Vehicle

  • Drying Techniques:

    • Once the vehicle is clean, dry it thoroughly using a microfiber towel. You can fold the towel and drag it across the surface to absorb water or use a larger drying towel to speed up the process.
    • If you have an air compressor, use it to blow out any water from crevices, edges, and other areas where moisture can hide. It’s crucial to remove all moisture before applying the vinyl.
  • Let It Dry Overnight:

    • For best results, we recommend prepping your vehicle the night before you plan to wrap it. Allow the vehicle to dry overnight in a garage or covered area to ensure that all moisture is gone.

5. Edge Preparation

  • Edge Prep Process:

    • Edge preparation is vital for ensuring that the vinyl adheres properly around the edges of each panel. Before you start wrapping, use the Edge Prep solution provided in your kit.
    • Spray a small amount of the solution onto a microfiber cloth and wipe down the edges of the panel. Focus on the top and sides, where dirt and oils can accumulate.
    • For hard-to-reach areas, wrap the cloth around the pink squeegee included in your kit. Spray the edge prep solution on the cloth and use the squeegee to clean deep into the edges and seams.
  • Double Check for Contaminants:

    • After cleaning, inspect the edges for any remaining dirt or contaminants. Repeat the process if necessary to ensure a clean, contaminant-free surface.

6. Final Tips Before Wrapping

  • Clean the Dirtiest Parts Last:

    • When prepping your Cybertruck, clean the dirtiest parts—such as the wheel wells and lower trims—last. This prevents you from recontaminating cleaner areas of the vehicle.
    • Don’t forget to clean inside the wheel wells, as dirt in these areas can transfer to the vinyl during installation.
  • Work in the Shade:

    • Always work in the shade or indoors to prevent the cleaning solutions from drying too quickly, which can leave streaks or water spots.
