Using the Practice KitUpdated 8 months ago

At TESBROS, we understand that wrapping your Tesla can be a challenging project, especially if you’re new to vinyl application. That’s why we include a practice kit with several pieces in our wrap kits, not only with strips but also a section of the rear driver’s side door. This allows you to get a good feel for the material and techniques before moving on to the full installation. Here’s how to make the most of your practice kit.

1. Starting with the Strips: Squeegee Techniques

  • Mastering the Squeegee:

    • Begin with the strips provided in your practice kit. These are perfect for learning how to hold and maneuver the squeegee. Hold the squeegee with four fingers on one side and your thumb on the other for stability, as discussed in previous instructions.
    • Ensure you have a clean microfiber buffer attached to the squeegee. This is crucial for protecting the vinyl and ensuring smooth application.
  • 45° Angle Application:

    • Place the strip on a flat panel and start applying the vinyl using a 45° angle. This angle helps push out any air bubbles and ensures that the vinyl adheres evenly across the surface. Don’t worry if you see some wrinkles forming as you work—this is common, and the squeegee technique will help smooth them out.
  • Overlap Your Strokes:

    • As you move the squeegee across the vinyl, remember to overlap each stroke by about 50%. This prevents the formation of air channels that can lead to bubbles and poor adhesion later. Consistent overlapping ensures a uniform application.
  • Applying Firm Pressure:

    • It’s important to apply firm, even pressure with the squeegee. Avoid the common beginner’s mistake of being too gentle, which can leave air bubbles trapped under the vinyl. Practice varying the pressure to see how it affects the vinyl, and aim to push out all the air for a smooth finish.

2. Working with the Door Panel: Advanced Techniques

  • Applying to a Real Panel:

    • Once you’re comfortable with the strips, move on to the door panel piece included in your practice kit. This piece is precisely cut and includes backing paper, just like the real panels in your wrap kit.
    • Begin by aligning the vinyl at the top of the door panel. Use the notches as alignment points and carefully position the vinyl before starting the application.
  • Managing Wrinkles and Bubbles:

    • As you apply the vinyl, you might encounter wrinkles or bubbles. If this happens, don’t panic. Lift the vinyl slightly to release the tension and then reapply it using the squeegee. Hold the vinyl so that it’s suspended slightly above the panel to avoid stretching it as you work.
  • Handling Complex Areas:

    • When working on areas with curves or corners, like the bottom of the door panel, apply the vinyl in sections. Start by smoothing down the center and working outwards. This approach helps prevent the material from bunching up and creates a clean finish.
    • Use relief cuts (pre-cut notches) to help the vinyl conform to tight corners without creating excess material that can cause wrinkles.

3. Practicing with Tools: Edge and Corner Wrapping

  • Using Tucking Tools:

    • The practice kit is a great opportunity to get familiar with tucking tools, such as the edge grabber and angled squeegee. These tools are essential for wrapping vinyl around edges and corners, ensuring a secure and seamless finish.
    • Practice wrapping the vinyl around the edges of the door panel piece, using the tucking tools to press the vinyl into place without stretching or tearing it.
  • Suspending the Vinyl:

    • When applying vinyl to edges or corners, it’s important to suspend the material slightly above the surface as you work. This technique prevents stretching and ensures that the vinyl wraps around the edge smoothly.

4. Practice Makes Perfect: Gain Confidence Before the Real Deal

  • Experiment and Learn:

    • Take your time with the practice kit. Try different techniques, adjust your pressure, and experiment with positioning. The more you practice, the more confident you’ll be when it’s time to wrap the actual panels.
    • Don’t rush—this practice time is valuable for getting comfortable with the tools and understanding how the vinyl behaves.
  • Repeat as Needed:

    • We’ve included multiple pieces in the practice kit so you can repeat the process as many times as needed. Practice with the door panel both with and without opening the door to simulate different scenarios you might encounter during the full installation.

Ready for the Real Panels

Once you’ve mastered the practice pieces, you’ll be ready to tackle the real panels on your Tesla with confidence. Remember, these practice pieces are designed to help you perfect your technique and avoid mistakes on the actual wrap. Take your time, and don’t hesitate to reach out to our support team if you have any questions.

Happy wrapping!
