How To Use Wrap ToolsUpdated 8 months ago
Getting the perfect wrap on your Tesla requires the right tools and techniques. We’ve provided all the necessary tools in your kit, and we encourage you to follow along with our courses for detailed video instructions. Here’s a quick guide to using the wrap tools effectively, but be sure to watch the accompanying videos to see these tips in action.
1. Microfiber Buffers and Squeegees
Microfiber Buffers:
- Before using your squeegee, make sure you’ve attached a clean microfiber buffer to it. This buffer covers the edges of the squeegee, preventing the plastic from scratching the vinyl.
- Attach the buffer to the shorter side of the squeegee, aligning it evenly on both sides. This ensures that the entire edge is covered, protecting your wrap during application.
- Hold the squeegee using your forefingers on one side and your thumb on the other for stability.
- Use the push method when applying the wrap. Pushing allows you to see how the squeegee interacts with the vinyl, helping you avoid wrinkles and bubbles.
- Start from the middle of the panel and work outward at a 45° angle. This technique helps push out any air and prevents bubbles from forming under the vinyl.
- For finishing edges, you can switch to a 90° angle near the end of the panel to ensure a smooth finish.
2. Wrap Magnets and Painter’s Tape
- Wrap Magnets:
- Use the wrap magnets to hold the vinyl in place while you work. This is especially helpful if you’re working alone. The magnets keep the vinyl from falling or shifting as you position it.
- Painter’s Tape:
- If you don’t have magnets, painter’s tape works great too. Just be careful when removing it from the vinyl—peel slowly and against the edge to avoid lifting the wrap.
3. Wrap Gloves
- Using Wrap Gloves:
- Wrap gloves help you smooth out the vinyl, particularly when working on curves or edges.
- Use your thumb or index finger to press down on the vinyl, smoothing out any bubbles or wrinkles. These gloves allow you to apply pressure without damaging the material.
4. Tucking Tools
- Edge Grabber:
- The edge grabber tool is perfect for wrapping around the back part of edges. It helps you secure the vinyl without stretching or tearing it.
- Tucking Tools:
- Use these tools to push the vinyl into tight spaces and corners, ensuring a seamless wrap. Be gentle to avoid cutting or ripping the vinyl.
5. Heat Gun
- Using the Heat Gun:
- The heat gun is one of the most important tools for wrapping. Use it on a high heat setting with heavy airflow to make the vinyl pliable.
- Keep the heat gun moving and maintain a distance of about 4-6 inches from the vinyl. This prevents overheating and ensures even application.
- Use the heat gun to "reset" the vinyl if it becomes wrinkled or damaged during application. Heating the vinyl allows it to revert back to its original state, making it easier to reapply.
6. Prep and Application
Mixing the Prep Solution:
- Mix an 80/20 solution of distilled water and alcohol in the provided spray bottle (80% water, 20% alcohol). This solution is used to clean and prep the surface before applying the vinyl.
- Spray the solution onto the surface and wipe it down with a clean microfiber cloth to remove any contaminants.
Practice with the Practice Kit:
- Before starting on the actual wrap, use the practice kit included in your set. This will help you get familiar with the tools and techniques, reducing the chances of mistakes on the main panels.
